A shared memory, a common path: A delegation from Kaluga Region honored the memory of the victims of “Khatyn” tragedy

26.07.2026

On July 26, 2026, as part of the official visit of Kaluga Region delegation to the Republic of Belarus, representatives of the region visited memorial complex “Khatyn”.

The guests' itinerary included a tour of the museum and the memorial complex. The delegation  examined documentary evidence of the crimes against humanity that formed the basis for the creation of this unique and mournful place of remembrance. The visit culminated in a ceremonial flower-laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame.

The words of Kaluga Region Governor Vladimir Potemkin added special emotional significance to the event.

"My ancestors, my father and grandfather, were from Smolensk province. The farmstead where they lived suffered the same ordeals as the residents of Khatyn village. They were herded into a barn and burned to death. Therefore, our family experiences the same suffering as the Belarusians in this touching and affecting place," said Vladimir Potemkin, sharing his personal story.

This visit confirms that historical memory knows no boundaries. Khatyn tragedy remains an important lesson for the entire international community, reminding us of the inadmissibility of such crimes and emphasizing the supreme value of human life and peaceful coexistence.
