Historical context of the holiday:
- In 1921, under the Peace of Riga, nearly half of the territory of present-day Belarus was ceded to another state. Subsequently, these lands remained under Polish administration for nearly twenty years.
- On September 17, 1939, amidst the Second World War, Soviet troops entered the eastern regions of Poland and occupied a number of cities in Western Belarus. Then, on November 14, 1939, Western Belarus was officially became part of Belorussian SSR.
- The initiative to establish National Unity Day emerged in February 2021. The holiday was officially instituted on June 7, 2021, by a decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus.
